Indicators

Learn about the science powering each indicators.
Species Habitat Index

The Species Habitat Index (SHI) measures changes in the estimated size and quality of ecologically intact areas supporting species populations.

Species Protection Index

The Species Protection Index (SPI) captures how adequately Protected Areas or Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures, i.e. conservation areas, conserve habitat and support the health and survival of species and their populations

Species Information Index

The Species Information Index (SII) measures the completeness of species data coverage in terms of publicly available occurrence records.

Biodiversity Patterns

Learn about the methods underlying the many biodiversity patterns layers.
Global Species Richness and Rarity

Global measures of the total number and the geographic restrictedness of species at 110km2 resolution. Calculated using species expert range maps.

Species Richness and Rarity (USACAN)

High resolution (1km2) measures of the total number and the geographic restrictedness of species across the United States and Canada. Calculated from species distribution models.

Biodiversity Facets

Global assessments of bird and mammal diversity along three facets: species diversity, phylogenetic diversity, and functional diversity layers. Layers from Pollock et al. (2017).

Discovery Potential

Global estimates of yet-to-be-discovered species based on historical patterns of species discovery. Layers from Moura & Jetz (2021).

Country Checklists

Number of species recorded or predicted to exist within each country. Odonate checklists are based on compiled data from the literature, global data aggregators, experts, and interpolation from Sandall et al. (2022). Butterfly checklists are based on compiled data from field guides, atlases, web sources, and global data aggregators from Pinkert et al. (2022).

Nonnative Species Checklists

Number of nonnative species recorded within each country as derived by the Country Compendium of the Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (GRIIS).

Urban Projections

Global projected impact of urban land expansion on species habitats to 2050 under three Shared Socio-economic Pathway scenarios. Layers from Simkin et al. 2022.

Global Butterfly Richness and Rarity

Global measures of the total number and the geographic restrictedness of 12,119 butterfly species at 110km2 resolution. Calculated from phylogenetic and geographic range data. Layers from Pinkert et al. 2025.
